History of the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg

Origins and Early Years (1985–1990)

The Grand Prix of St. Petersburg began in 1985 as a sports car event aimed at showcasing the city’s downtown waterfront. Organizers envisioned St. Petersburg as the “Monaco of the Floridian coast,” leveraging the marina and city streets as a scenic backdrop. The first course included a loop around the downtown pier – creating the longest stretch of waterfront racing in the U.S. However, this layout proved less than ideal for competition. By 1986, the track was revised to avoid the pier, and the event continued annually with the SCCA Trans-Am Series as the headliner until 1990.

Notable drivers like Scott Pruett and Walter Röhrl took victories during this period, but the race struggled financially and faced noise complaints from local residents. A tragic moment occurred in 1987 when veteran driver Jim Fitzgerald lost his life in a crash on turn one of the street circuit. Despite its challenges, the event gave St. Pete a taste of international motorsport, attracting an estimated 60,000 spectators to its inaugural race. However, the event failed to turn a profit and eventually went on hiatus after losing its primary sponsor in 1990.

Hiatus and Revival Attempts (1996–2003)

After several dormant years, racing returned to St. Petersburg in 1996 and 1997 with a different circuit around the Tropicana Field baseball stadium. Despite drawing decent crowds with the Trans-Am Series, the event was discontinued again after losing its title sponsor. However, local organizers were determined to bring high-profile racing back to the city. Their efforts paid off in 2003 when the CART Champ Car World Series agreed to sanction a Grand Prix in St. Petersburg

A new 1.8-mile downtown temporary circuit was designed, uniquely incorporating one runway of the city’s Albert Whitted Airport along with city streets. This gave the track a character similar to airport circuits like Cleveland, with a long airport runway main straight and tight turns downtown. The modern track – 14 turns winding around the marina and airport – offered genuine overtaking opportunities. Paul Tracy took the checkered flag in the 2003 Champ Car race, but financial turmoil in CART led to the event being canceled in 2004.

IndyCar Era and Evolution (2005–Present)

In 2005, the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg found new life as part of the Indy Racing League (IRL), which later became today’s IndyCar Series. This marked the first-ever non-oval race for the formerly oval-only series. Dan Wheldon, a St. Petersburg resident at the time, won the inaugural IRL-sanctioned race in 2005. His victory kicked off a championship season in storybook fashion.

Since 2009, the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg has typically served as the season-opening round each spring, except in 2020 when it was postponed to October due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The race expanded into a festival-style weekend in 2007, featuring an American Le Mans Series sports car race alongside IndyCar. Today, the event includes a variety of support series, making it a motorsports festival for the city.

The Grand Prix’s name and sponsorship have evolved over time. From 2005 to 2013, it was known as the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. In 2014, Firestone took over as title sponsor, a partnership that continues today. Throughout its evolution, Team Penske has dominated at St. Pete, winning 12 races – the most of any team. Penske drivers, including Hélio Castroneves, Will Power, Josef Newgarden, and Juan Pablo Montoya, have consistently been the ones to beat on this street course.

Notable Past Winners

Several elite drivers have etched their names in the history of the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg:

  • Hélio Castroneves – Holds the record for most wins with three victories (2006, 2007, 2012). Castroneves famously climbed the fence to celebrate each of his wins, earning his nickname “Spider-Man.”

  • Will Power – Two-time winner (2010, 2014) known for his qualifying prowess and success with Team Penske.

  • Josef Newgarden – Two-time winner (2019, 2020), achieving back-to-back victories for Team Penske.

  • Juan Pablo Montoya – Two-time winner (2015, 2016), showcasing his versatility on this street circuit.

  • Sébastien Bourdais – Two-time winner (2017, 2018), delighting local fans with back-to-back wins on his adopted home streets.

  • Dan Wheldon – Winner of the 2005 race, the first IRL IndyCar event in St. Pete. After Wheldon’s tragic death in 2011, a portion of the track was renamed “Dan Wheldon Way” in his honor.
